Moms at the Movies: “Zombieland”

200px-Zombieland-posterA couple girlfriends and I went to see the new movie “Zombieland” (which stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin). The film takes place within a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies  (triggered by a virulent form of human adapted mad cow disease) and begins with narration by “Columbus” (Eisenberg) who is explaining what is going on and his “rules” for survival. By the end of the film the list has thirty-three rules with only some of them being mentioned.

Jesse Eisenberg (who was recently seen in “Adventureland” with Kristen Stewart) is the epitome of the ‘anti-hero’ … skinny, geeky and a loner – who also has a sweetness that makes you root for him throughout the movie. Woody Harrelson plays the zombie-ass-kicking “Tallahassee” who joins forces with Eisenberg’s “Columbus” in a search for life, liberty and the pursuit of Twinkies. Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin play sisters who throw a wrench in Tallahassee and Columbus’ plans!

Some of Columbus’ “Rules” include:

  1. Cardio – the “fatties” will die first!
  2. Double tap – this is the apocalypse, just shoot twice already.
  3. Beware of bathrooms – what can you do to fight them off if you are on the crapper?
  4. (Don’t) Be a hero – save your own ass first.
  5. Limber up – this goes along with ‘rule #1′ …
  6. Check the back seat – you will get more than ‘carjacked’ if you don’t!
  7. Enjoy the little things – especially Twinkies.

I thought this movie was one of the most hilarious movies I’ve ever seen. Period. Yes it’s disgusting and gory, yes there are zombies and curse words and death and destruction … but by the time the movie really kicks up you won’t even notice anymore because you will be too busy laughing.

This movie is great for horror buffs and comedy nuts alike. Bring the girls (or the hubby) but definetly NOT the kids (I totally saw some Dad and his 10 year old son in the movie … they left a few minutes in THANK GOODNESS!)
