Mom’s at the Movies: Top Box Office Hits (1/15/10)

15 January 2010 4 Comments

There are a lot of big name and big budget movies playing right now. Here is the Top Ten along with a short review if I saw the movie.

  1. Avatar ………………………………………… $50.3M
Of course Avatar is number one – this movie was absolutely breathtaking and amazing! Yes the story is a little “recycled” (I’ve heard it compared to “Dances with Wolves”) but it’s still a good one. It’s got something for both women and men – it’s a love story, but it’s also a human-interest story that shows how nasty (and greedy) humans can be (with some guns and high-tech gear of course). I saw it with two friends in IMAX 3-D and I wouldn’t see it any other way. It’s so worth the money and I honestly hope I can see it at least once more before it leaves the movies.
  2. Sherlock Holmes ……………………………  $16.5M
I haven’t seen this one – but it’s on my “to-do” list! Robert Downy Jr. looks pretty yummy!
  3. Alvin & Chipmunks 2 ……………………….  $16.5M
I’ve heard nothing but good things about this movie from my friends who have taken their kids to see it! It’s on Xander’s “to-do” list!
  4. Daybreakers…………………………………. $15.1M
This movie looks awesome! On my “to-do” list! Saw it! Read my Daybreakers review!
  5. It’s Complicated …………………………….  $11.0M
This movie was absolutely laugh-out-loud fabulous! Meryl Streep is always awesome (”I like a lot of semen …“), Alec Baldwin is hilarious and I just ADORE Steve Martin (”Not the best time to be feeling groovy“). Be on the lookout for toking-old people and Alec Baldwin’s ass! LOL!
  6. Leap Year……………………………………… $9.2M
Looks cute but I probably won’t see it in the movies.
  7. The Blind Side ……………………………….  $7.5M
Eh … this one doesn’t interest me.
  8. Up in the Air…………………………………. $7.1M
This is supposed to be a really great movie! I really like George Clooney and the girl who play’s Jessica Stanley in the Twilight Saga movies (Anna Kendrick) is really funny. It’s on my “to-do” list.
  9. Youth in Revolt……………………………… $6.8M
I’ve no idea what this movie is about! Oh, this is the one with Michael Cera. This is a maybe.
  10. Princess and the Frog ……………………..  $4.6M
This movie was great!! It’s about time Disney came up with a smart and sassy female role-model! My son loved this movie! It had a few maybe-scary parts (it’s set in New Orleans and has a lot of voodoo references) but it was really a cool movie. I definitely recommend it!

I haven’t seen any of these but want to see 1-8 and 10. We don’t go to the movies very often. We used to go all the time. Maybe it’s time for a date night.

Only have seen Alvin and it was cute. A bit annoying, but went with a bunch of kids and not one peep was heard, not even a bathroom break. Love anything with Meryl Streep in it. That’s on my to see list.
